Guest House, Camps Bay

Camps Bay is one of Cape Town’s most desirable suburbs, so no wonder it’s full of upscale hotels. Close to the area’s famous white-sand beach, Retreat on Hove is a sophisticated blend of boutique B&B and private home. Guests have their own apartments, but share facilities and gather for yummy buffet breakfasts. The look is crisply modern with a dash of warm timber, while the Atlantic Ocean views are pure Hollywood. No wonder actress Charlize Theron is a former guest.

There are four suites, all of them spacious and relaxing. On the ground floor are the warmly-decorated Private Garden Retreat, whose pocket of greenery features a daybed, and the Sun Retreat, where large windows frame the mighty Twelve Apostle mountains. A floor up are two premier suites, both facing seawards in glorious fashion. The bigger Panoramic Retreat fits a king-size bed. All the quartet promise privacy and much luxury: Nespresso machines, bathtubs, iPod docks, large showers and walk-in-closets.

Nor does the luxury stop there. Entering the hotel, you’ll immediately notice a see-through swimming pool on the floor above; around it winds a sun terrace, once more overlooking the bay. Back inside is a private cinema where popcorn awaits, a slumberous, fire-heated lounge, a small office, a fully-fitted kitchen and a dining area with great big chandeliers. The newest addition is Retreat on Hove’s spa and hot tub; three-hour treatments are available.

It’s a 15-minute stroll to Camps Bay’s palm-flanked beach, lining which are coffee shops, bars, boutiques and good-quality restaurant. Luke and Jaun can offer tip. Cape Town’s centre is also 15 minutes, this time by taxi, while the V&A Waterfront and Table Mountain cable car station are slightly closer. In other directions are scenic Chapman’s Peak Drive, and the gourmet Winelands.

Child Policy
Children aged 8 and over are welcome, but must pay full adult rates. There’s no provision for extra beds in rooms.
