Montusi Mountain Lodge

Mountain Resort, The Drakensberg

About

Perform a 360-degree twirl at Montusi, and the mighty Drakensberg Mountains will remain a glorious constant the whole way round.  They flank this friendly hotel in every direction, providing an idyllic setting for its 16 thatched garden suites, pool, excellent restaurant and main lodge.  Equally well-suited to daydreaming as pulse-quickening pursuits, Montusi is the northern ‘Berg’s most exclusive accommodation.

Accommodation

Scattered around expansive gardens, every one of those spacious cottages affords incredible, silence-inducing Amphitheatre  – as the northern Drakensberg Mountains are known – views from a private patio.  Split into ten Garden Suites, four larger Family Suites and two larger-still, more modern Mountain suites, they each have lounges with DVD players, gas operated fireplaces and bathtubs.  After dinner, you’ll find homemade cookies waiting, plus a weather report for the following day.

Facilities

Using locally-caught trout, Karoo lamb and much more, dinners are dished up in the central lodge’s spacious dining room, with more stunning views.  So too are breakfasts with homemade breads.  There’s also a well-stocked, lounge bar, a massage room and a scenic terrace leading out to the large pool and tennis court.  Private dining can be arranged for suites if preferred.

Activities

Daily guided walks depart each morning around the 1,000-hectare estate, passing bushbuck en route to rock pools (for summer swimming) and caves filled with ancient rock art.  Self-guided options are available, too, as are treks into nearby Tugela Gorge and day hikes to the top of the Amphitheatre using vertical metal-chain ladders.  Horse-riding, cycling, quad-biking, birdwatching, fly-fishing and trips to see Battlefields or the Basotho cultural village are also possible, along with rounds at the nearby Amphitheatre Golf Course.

Child Policy

Children of all ages are welcome, with many activities suiting youngsters.  Separate family mealtimes are provided.

The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.

Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
