Hermanus

About

There are two things you can hear when standing on the cliffs in Hermanus, looking out over the panoramic scenery; the sound of the South Atlantic crashing on the shore and the call of the whale crier. The sound of course, comes from his kelp horn and the whales he calls are some 60 – 100 Southern Right Whales who make their way to South Africa from the Antarctic every year.

The breaching of the whales really is a site to behold and thousands flock to Hermanus every year to witness this exciting behaviour. Of course, they also head to this beachside village for its glorious beaches and incredibly easy-going way of life.

Hermanus is surrounded by natural splendor, which influences both locals and tourists to partake in a number of outdoor activities. From shark cage diving, horse riding and paragliding to fishing, hiking and paragliding. Whether experiencing Hermanus from inside a shark cage or from high above in the air while paragliding, you can be sure you’ll have an unforgettable time. After all, there will be plenty of time to rest back at one of the area’s luxury hotels.

The Hermanus hills are also home to a few wine makers who sell their bottled grape magic at the many markets. While considered a retirement village, the people of Hermanus are very much about a healthy way of life and most of the markets sell organic locally sourced produce.

This community-centric town also hosts a number of festivals throughout the year. Whether you’re enjoying some of the fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants or marveling at the mammoth sea life in the ocean you can be sure that Hermanus will catch your heart – hook line and sinker. Making Hermanus one of the top places to visit in South Africa.

Getting there

Hermanus is located on the Southern Coast of the Western Cape and is accessible via the R43, either from Sandbaai or Stanford.

Best time to visit

Winter and spring (June to November) are the best times to visit Hermanus – although cold, it’s the ideal time to view the Southern Right Whales.
