Tswalu The Motse

Game Lodge, The Kalahari Desert

About

For a luxury safari adventure, the Tswalu Kalahari – South Africa’s largest private reserve – takes some beating.  Deep within it, The Motse offers tailormade wildlife experiences amidst five-star opulence.  Part of the 'National Geographic Unique Lodges Of The World', the camp sits beside a busy waterhole, and offers a sumptuous choice of classically-fitted suites. Enjoy a private vehicle with the full attention of a personal filed guide and tracker for the duration of your stay.

Accommodation

The Motse’s perimeter is dotted with nine high-ceilinged suites or ‘legae’, each with their own private deck facing the Korannaberg mountains.  Three have been designed for families, fitting separate bedrooms around a central living room.  And all boast classic African style – stone and clay walls under Kalahari-thatch roofs – plus fireplaces and outside showers, allowing guests to combine game-watching with armpit-soaping.

Facilities

Guests can relax in one of two pools – or around them, lying on loungers under hand-thatched parasols.  The Sanctuary Spa provides local-style therapies and opens onto a secret garden with a yoga pavilion.  Back in the main house is a lounge filled with plump cushions and fireplaces, and a walk-in wine cellar.  Informal, inventive dinners are served in the outdoor boma, on candlelit dunes or inside the lounge.

Activities

Safaris are tailored to your group’s wishes.  Prefer to see the local meerkat colonies?  No problem.  Desperate for cheetah?  Easy.  Rather look for rare desert black rhino?  Sure thing.  Game drives, horseback rides and educational bush walks are available, and you probably won’t see another group all day.  For a truly unique experience, sleep out on The Malori, an isolated deck with king-size bed.  You’ll drift off to exotic animal sounds and wake up to breakfast.

Child Policy

Children are made extremely welcome in this malaria-free paradise.  Special touches include a kid’s food menu, stable visits and rolling down sand dunes, while the Junior Ranger programme includes archery and tracking lessons from local Bushmen.  Complimentary babysitting is also on offer.

The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.

Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
