Kanonkop House

Boutique Hotel, Knysna

About

Family-owned, five-star, bijou and award-winning, handsome Kanonkop occupies an enviable forest location just outside Knysna.  Stupendous views of the lagoon and the sandstone Knysna Heads are on offer from its luxurious suites, as is welcome relief from the Garden Route’s bustle.  After memorable days golfing, beach-combing or whale-watching, kick back beside a pool or slumber on one of the scenic verandahs.

Accommodation

Though individually styled, the six room and suites share common elements: minimalist African art, lots of light, handmade paddle fans and fine furniture.  Choose between two garden rooms with private terraces overlooking the pool or the main building’s four suites.  Among them are the penthouse Selwyn Suite, boasting two balconies, and the Paradise Suite.  Occupying the entire third floor, this latter includes a king-size sleigh bed and, according to Frommer's, the Garden Route’s finest vistas.  Further up the hill is an exclusive-use villa, Knysna Heights, sleeping six and guaranteeing total privacy.

Facilities

Kanonkop’s large main pool is dotted with beckoning daybeds.  Nearby are lounges and super-scenic terraces, with a bar ensuring the sundowner box is ticked.  Whether it’s for sunset or stargazing, this is a wonderful place to wallow.  Better yet, all drinks, along with breakfast, are complimentary.  There’s no restaurant, but Knysna’s many options are just minutes away.

Activities

The charismatic Conyers family own Kanonkop, and their name is a byword for superb service.  That extends to assisting your daily thrills: you can use their boat for cruises or water-skiing, borrow kayaks to paddle upriver, steer mountain bikes around the bumpy forest or go fishing at top local spots.  There’s good news for golfers, too: Kanonkop is a member of Fancourt, Pezula and Simola exclusive clubs, meaning guests receive special rates. Simola Golf Course is a Jack Nicklaus designed course, and Kanonkop House played host to Jack during his visits to Knysna.

Child Policy

Only children aged 10 and over are accepted, although younger kids can stay at Knysna Heights.

The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.

Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
