Wine Estate, Stellenbosch

Description

One of South Africa’s oldest wine farms, Spier’s spectacular estate contains superb restaurants, a spa, birds of prey and 153 rooms inside classic Cape Dutch-style buildings.  Located outside the Winelands hub of Stellenbosch, it also boasts masses of acclaimed vines – ones which visitors can stroll or Segway around – and staunch, multi-award-winning eco-principles: determinedly-organic production, fair trading and terrific community projects.

Accommodation

Mimicking a Mediterranean village, Spier’s sleepy white and cream-walled clusters enclose six leafy, lawned courtyards – each with communal swimming pools – or line the Eerste River.  Ground-floor Superior Rooms give easy bathing or waterside access from their armchaired patios while, one storey up, Standard Rooms provide equal space and comfy wooden furniture, plus the same large baths.  Some larger suites for families await beside the Eerste River.

Facilities

Facing the Helderberg Mountains, Spier’s attractive wine-tasting centre offers various food-pairing packages (extra cost) under a chandelier made from recycled bottles.  Next door is a local craft market (October-May) selling high-quality pots and jewellery, with classes available.  The landscaped grounds also shelter a contemporary-art collection, an amphitheatre staging summer concerts and a spa.  As for food, residents must (somehow) decide between informal Eight’s farm-to-table fare, picnics from the Eight To Go Deli, slow-smoked meat platters at Hoghouse BBQ & Bakery or seasonal fine-dining in Spier Restaurant and Wine Bar.

Activities

Spier hosts Eagle Encounters, a bird-of-prey rehabilitation project, and guests can meet its resident falcons, owls and so on.  Also possible are 90-minute walks around the vineyards and its prolific protea (sugarbush) gardens, or Segway versions (extra cost).  Golfers will be sated by the nearby De Zalze estate.

Child Policy

Spier’s Kids' Clubhouse lets children aged 2-12 enjoy a range of activities including ice biscuits, make feather art or take farm walks while their parents taste wines.  As well as enclosed gardens with climbing frames and age specific toy caches, Spier also offers a babysitting service at an additional cost.  The hotel allows one child to stay in the parents room, and a range of spacious inter-connecting rooms and suites.

Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
