Rocktail Beach Camp

Beach Lodge, KwaZulu-Natal

About

Tucked away in a coastal forest, Rocktail Beach Camp overlooks a stunningly beautiful and remote beach in KwaZulu Natal. With outstanding views out to sea, this luxury tented retreat is located within a rich marine reserve and World Heritage Site, making it one of the best dive spots in South Africa.  Guests have exclusive access to the sites along this remote stretch of the coastline.

Accommodation

The camp consists of 17 en-suite rooms featuring hardwood floors, wrap-around balconies and indoor showers. Seven of these are family units with a shared bathroom and two bedrooms to comfortably accommodate two adults and two children. An intimate honeymoon unit has wonderful views over the Indian Ocean and dune forest.

Facilities

The main camp consists of a large comfortable lounge and bar area, a covered outdoor dining area and wrap-around wooden veranda that extends onto a raised viewing deck with beautiful views across the forest to the Indian Ocean.  There is also a wine cellar and a curio shop for gifts for those at home.

The large swimming pool is ideal for lazy days with a good book or if you've brought the family along, you'll be pleased to hear that there are plenty of activities to keep the kids occupied including a children’s playroom. The PADI-accredited Dive Centre at the camp will organise exciting diving and snorkelling excursions and can also provide courses for beginner to advanced divers.

Activities

Famed for its prime viewing position on the beach front, Rocktail Beach Camp plays hosts to an annual pilgrimage for thousands of Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles that come ashore between October and December to lay their eggs.  Guests can watch them hatch and help with tagging each hatchling between January and March, which is an unforgettable experience for both adults and children.

Complimentary activities include snorkelling at Lala Nek, trips to see the hippo at Lake Sibaya, guided beach and forest trails and of course swimming. Activities at an additional charge include scuba diving (including PADI courses), salt water fly-fishing excursions to Black Rock (60-foot fossilised sand dune with spectacular views), horse riding, Sangoma (traditional herbalist) cultural visits, Zulu dancing and star-gazing.

The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.

Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
