Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel

City Hotel, City Bowl

About

Painted pink after World War II to cheer up returning troops, this Cape Town classic has been attracting dignitaries and celebs for over a century.  It’s spectacularly located at the foot of Table Mountain, near the V&A Waterfront and fashionable Kloof Street, and yet feels positively rural thanks to acres of landscaped lawns.  Families and couples are equally well catered for, the food is legendary and the service unrivalled.

Accommodation

Each with its own character and facilities, the Mount Nelson’s seven wings are dotted around its garden estate, pulling together to provide 198 rooms and suites in total.  All are beautiful, blending 21st century conveniences with soft hues.  Category-wise, Deluxe Rooms are adequately spacious and come with sitting areas and marble bathtubs while the various size Suites are bigger still some including walk-in-wardrobes.  Largest of all are the secluded and very lavish Garden Cottage Suites.

Facilities

Mount Nelson’s reputation as the Grande Dame of Cape Town hotels has much to do with its excellent food.  Afternoon tea is a particular rite of passage, while the formal Planet Restaurant and low-key Oasis Bistro are both excellent.  So too is the immaculate Librisa Spa, with its ten treatment rooms and connected gym.  Out among the trees are two large, heated pools (one adults-only), two tennis courts and some golf nets.

Activities

Cape Town’s main attractions all await nearby.  Complimentary shuttles run to the V&A Waterfront and friendly, efficient reception staff can assist with any tours or restaurant bookings.

Child Policy

Mount Nelson is family-friendly and then some.  The Nellie and Nelson centre is a fully-supervised club for the under 12s, while young adults can compete on Xbox 360s in the Teens’ Lounge.  In peak season, a lifeguard oversees the all-ages pool, and there’s even a children’s spa menu.  Reckon your little darlings could use a Princess Pedicure or Teen Cleanse?

The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.

Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
