Country Retreat, Plettenberg Bay

This opulent family run country hotel is one of the best on the Garden Route and known worldwide as a boutique oasis for both adults and children.  Set on a plateau in the foothills of the Western Cape mountains but also close to the gorgeous beaches of Plettenberg Bay, this Cape Dutch homestead is set amidst the vast natural beauty of their own 1,700 acre estate.

It is an exclusive hideaway which is consistently rated as one of the best in the world and is renowned for its aristocratic ancestry, fine cuisine and boundless activities and adventures for the entire family.

Twelve sumptuous rooms all with their own private patio or courtyard - and embellished daily with fragrant fresh roses picked from the grounds. Some offer a private plunge pool or rustic fireplace and all have huge en-suites.

There are even individually decorated children’s suites with 5 star touches for the little ones.

The vast grounds boast their very own Polo fields, tennis court, swimming pools and award winning Spa. Treat yourself to some horse riding or take advantage of the quad biking facilities. Take a hike, or a picnic in the mountains or discover a wealth of fun on the beaches of Plettenberg Bay only 12 miles away where whale and dolphin watching is a must.

Enjoy fine cuisine created by executive chef Leon Coetzee.  Dining options include the library, the verandah, the pool, your private terrace or at the Chef's Table.

Have a massage in the luxury Spa or take advantage of Kurland’s child friendly facilities such as a private playroom, special children's menus, and a babysitting service available on request.

The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.

Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
